Spies are one of the most exciting characters in movies. There were many spies in the city of Casablanca in the 1940s, or in Istanbul and Beirut during the Cold War. The spies working in the intelligence agencies of the countries took charge in important points of the world for years. Following secret deals, assassinations, cracking down on international criminal organizations, preventing terrorist attacks are the daily jobs of spies. Of course, you can't expect Hollywood to be unresponsive to such an entertaining and attractive subject. Many spy and mystery books, from Agatha Christie mysteries to Ian Fleming's spy books, have been scripted and adapted for the big screen.
Spy movies were so popular that perhaps one of the longest running characters in Hollywood history was born from here; James Bond. James Bond became the hero who taught us that a pen is not just a pen. The spies, whose rockets shoot out in front of their cars, whose gum is a bomb, whose watchband turns into a climbing rope, have been and continue to be portrayed by Hollywood's most handsome and attractive actors.
Hollywood stars such as Sean Connery, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon and Daniel Craig have added to their fame with their spy movies. Their characters have become the most well-known characters in cinema, and they have also become Hollywood's most sought-after actors.
When we look at spy movies, we see that they are generally divided into two. These are biography and fiction. Of course, we are not aware of the most important espionage events in history, but almost all known espionage events leaked to the press have been filmed. These biographies have generally been processed so well by Hollywood that many of them have been Oscar-nominated movies.
On the other hand, examples of the spy movie genre that we can call fiction have also evolved over time. New spies no longer use pen laser guns like they used to. The movies, which show the audience that spies are also human beings and make decisions with their emotions, achieved success as no one expected. The most influential of these is “Skyfall”. Directed by Sam Mendes, the movie showed us that James Bond also had a childhood and that he too could suffer. The worldwide box office success of over $1 billion has also taken spy movies to the next level.
