What is the secret of being a good photographer, is it the educational background or the perspective of the photographer? This discussion has been going on for a very long time and it will continue. I met with Los Angeles based architectural photographer Christopher Lee who has an academic background in Biology and Public Health Science. And I asked him about his career and the basics of architectural photography.

Christopher, how did you decide to pursue a career in photography? What or who inspired you?

I have always been intrigued with photography. It’s a creative medium that allows me to capture those special moments of life in a way only a camera lens can. I started by snapping photos with my smartphone whenever I came across something that inspired me. Friends and co-workers started noticing my work and suggested that I should consider making photography a career. So I got myself a professional camera and here I am.

The people most influential in my life are my grandmother Ama and my mother. Ama was always spending her time in the garden tending her herbs and vegetables. My Mom, on the other hand, was a great chef. She taught me how to cook, and I would say that she has influenced all my creative endeavors.

Before talking about photography, could you tell us about yourself? Who is Christopher Lee?

My academic background is actually in Science and Pre-Medicine. I have a BS in Biology with a minor in Statistics and a Masters in Public Health Science. After graduation, I worked for a time as a hospital project manager. But I discovered a passion for design instead, and that led me to work in the floral industry designing with flowers for many floral/event companies. I still occasionally take on freelance design gigs. My hobbies include cooking, gardening, interior design, and travel.

How would you describe your photographic approach?

Self-taught, my images draw inspiration from landscapes to architecture to editorial lifestyle. My style of photography is influenced by organic compositions with a mix of fashion, editorial, and photojournalism. My images feel natural, organic and dreamy.

Could you tell us about Christopher Lee Foto and your team?

I’m basically a one man show. Although I’m based in Los Angeles, I travel wherever work takes me.

What type of projects do you specialize in? What type of services do you offer to architecture and design firms?

I specialize in interiors, but I also photograph architecture / landscapes / gardens and lifestyle - families, couples, headshots, pets, and events.

What is the most important component of a spectacular interior photograph?

Good lighting is essential. I prefer to work with natural light whenever possible because it produces the best results.

How does the work of a professional architectural photographer add value to the project?

It helps capture the work in the best light for exposure and magazine submissions. Also provides a professional portfolio to reach out to a potential client.

Could your clients use the photographs in any publication, catalog, website, ad or other platforms in the future?

A written agreement is signed between the client and myself regarding usage rights and a new agreement is drafted for future usage.

Smartphones and affordably priced DSLR cams made everyone is more enthusiastic about photography. How did this affect the professional photography industry?

Photography has become easily accessible via Smartphones and affordable DSLR. However, clients continue to hire professional photographers because they understand the importance of quality images that only professional photographers can deliver. Professional photographers combine skills, experience, and a keen eye to create professional images.

Do you have favorite architects and designers that you love to photograph their projects?

One my very favorite architects that I would love to work with is Zaha Hadid. Her team thinks outside of the box. Hadid’s designs are innovative, voluptuous, and thought-provoking. Her work has interesting lines, curves and is simply stunning.

Thank you Christopher for this enjoyable interview.
