In the case of traffic accidents, side impacts may cause fatal consequences. The new system developed by ZF is an airbag system designed to minimize the impact of the lateral effects. The external side airbag system is activated before the collision and can reduce the impact of the collision by 40%. Sensors in different parts of the vehicle decide whether the crash will take place, and the external side airbags are deployed according to this decision.
ZF made the first demonstration of the World's first pre-crash security system in Memmingen. This prototype test proved how the external side airbag work.
The biggest challenge in the design phase of this new life-saving product is the fact that there are only 150 milliseconds in the system for sensors to perceive and decide the danger. ZF officials said that they had provided all decision-making processes in this period of time thanks to the efforts in this process and they set up a system to fill the airbags with a volume of 280 and 400 liters.
The ZF pre-crash safety system is an innovative solution that will significantly reduce injuries caused by lateral accidents. Operating in more than 40 countries with 149,000 employees, ZF uses 6% of its annual turnover to research and develop innovative technologies. As a result of these efforts, new life-saving products and solutions have been creating, such as the newly developed Pre-crash External Side Airbag System.
