Although protecting nature is a comprehensive concept, the goal can be achieved by protecting the smallest parts. Every individual can help protect nature with very simple actions. Closing the tap while brushing your teeth, sorting out trash and recycling, using public transport as much as possible to reduce carbon emissions, are just a few of these measures. People have built cities in the habitats of animals, so it is our responsibility to make life easier for the animals. We can start by putting water containers in front of our doors on hot days. Miia Liesegang and Taina Tallala focused on butterflies, which we see in nature every day. They designed an oasis where the butterflies, which had an essential role in maintaining the natural cycle by pollinating, could take a break and feed. And Belightful Butterfly Oasis was born. Belightful Butterfly Oasis, which decorates the verandas of houses with its elegant design and can be used as a feeding station for butterflies, is an example of individual initiative to protect nature. I talked with Miia Liesegang, Co-Founder and CEO of Belightful Design, about Belightful Butterfly Oasis.

Miia, before talking about Belightful Butterfly Oasis, could you tell us about yourself and your design experience?

Well, I studied in Turku, Finland, and I graduated in 2007. At the same year, I established my own design company doing design for different companies. My work is driven by the desire to create an innovative design that can improve everyday life and make it more enjoyable. My diverse projects have explored the fields of furniture, jewelry, interiors, media, service design, advertising, marketing, and art. I am a versatile and awarded designer who avoids categorization and its limits, and rather work with various projects that inspire. In my design commissions, I adeptly integrate the needs and intentions of my clients with those of projects companies and consumers.

I also have 19 years of experience as a visualist and designer, and have implemented numerous commercials and other projects in the media business.

Now I have focused on Belightful Design for 3,5 years.

Taina and you, how did you meet? When did you establish Belightful Design, and what was your common goal?

Taina and I had offices in the same building and every now and then we started talking about everyday life and work. We both share the value about protecting nature, and at some point, we realized that maybe we could do something together.

How did you decide to create Belightful Butterfly Oasis? What inspired you?

I had the idea about butterfly feeders, and when I started to talk about it to Taina, she was immediately ready to start. We understood that when we talk about green care, sometimes people want to start with little and easy steps. We were inspired about the idea that taking care of nature can also be fun, and it can also give something back. We believe that when you have positive nature experiment, you will also value nature more and this can be the way of protecting nature.

Why are butterflies special? How does Butterfly Oasis help butterflies?

Butterflies are pollinating widely different flowers and plants, they are important for natures biodiversity.

What type of materials do you use in Belightful Butterfly Oasis production? Is it only compatible with Butterfly Nectar or users can make their own nectar?

Because we want to protect nature, we decided that fossil-based plastic are not an option. We are using PLA, polylactic acid, which is biobased. And we are also providing the nectar, but surely you can test your own ones. Of course, we have developed our nectar to Oasis, so if you ate testing your own, there can be mold or something else...

Belightful Butterfly Oasis is an award-winning design. You proved your design with an award, but it is hard to prove functionality. How do you describe it, is it only stylish, or is it really functional?

My work is driven by the desire to create an innovative design that can improve everyday life and make it more enjoyable. I believe that you can combine form and function, like in our Butterfly Oasis.

Do you have any new designs on the drawing table? What should we wait?

We have even tested our next product, but you still have to wait... With our next product, we still stay in the same theme, to help nature and strengthen our nature connection.
